Overview
Individuals typically only rate an experience if it was very good or bad, and the ratings for mediocre service tend to be skewed more positively due to the emotional labor of evaluating a service. Therefore, rating systems only capture a small portion of the overall journey or process.
Our goal was to create a comprehensive approach for artists or freelancers to be evaluated holistically by their client. We designed an evaluation system that helps clients find freelancers for projects based on a more accurate rating system with room for feedback, rather than a standard five-star or thumbs-up thumbs-down system which may not accurately portray an artists’ ability.
The goal of the interviews was to better understand the challenges and difficulties experienced by clients and the freelancers that they hire.
Uber implements a five-star rating system that incorporates tags to highlight areas of concern. A brief description is also listed underneath the rating system to clarify what their rating will be interpreted as.
Airbnb also implements a typical five-star rating system. The ratings are broken down into categories that are segments of the entire rating. If the reviewer wants to leave a more detailed review, there is an area for feedback to leave a comment that correlates to their rating.
Netflix uses a thumbs-up/thumbs-down system.
A major takeaway from affinity diagramming was that clients were confused due to the lack of context in rating and the whole user journey.
Objective
Our main goals were to:
1. Help clients better understand the performance of freelancers
2. Clarify the context of the ratings by redesigning existing rating systems, such as the 5-star rating system
